Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a suite of compounds that are entirely human-made. They don’t occur naturally in the environment but once formed, they tend to stick around. Known as ‘forever chemicals’, PFAS are the by-product of many manufacturing processes and products. They are prevalent in paints, stain- and water-resistant products, fabric conditioners, firefighting foams and insulating or heat-resistant treatments.
